Almost. I almost passed. I almost won. I almost made it. When you think about it, it’s probably one of the most negative words in the dictionary. It means that you almost did something, but you didn’t, you failed.
That’s the wrong way to look at it though. Sure you almost won a marathon, but you really did more than that. You finished that marathon, you trained hard, you gave it all you got, but all we hear is that you almost won a marathon.
It’s quite demoralizing really. You were there, but you just weren’t good enough. Good, but not good enough. That right there is how we feel all the time, good, but not good enough.
The word holds the power to really take a punch. It hits you when you’re down, when you almost did something but failed. Nobody wants to be an almost, but at least we all have the same fear.
